Students from all over Japan participating in the 2013 Media Workshop for Junior High and High School Girls visit Rakuten
The “2013 Information Media Workshop for Junior High and High School Girls” is a summer program targeted to Junior High and High School girls aspiring to careers in science and math. The program aims to deepen participants’ interest in IT fields by conducting tours of major IT firms and arranging actual programming experiences. At the end of August, 2013, 16 participating students with an interest in IT visited Rakuten as a part of the workshop.
After a tour of the company, female employees at Rakuten who had originally studied liberal arts spoke about working at Rakuten. Thereafter, participants split up into small groups where they spoke with female employees about working in IT – the hardships and the joy, the sense of accomplishment, etc.
During the question and answer period, the dialogue proceeded freely and frankly, with students asking questions such as:
“So, have you been speaking English since college then?”
“How did you choose what college to go to?”
Pictures from the Q&A were published on the website “IT Pro.”
After the event ended, we received such comments and observations as:
“Knowing that women play active roles in so many departments gave me courage!”
“I also want a job where I can interact with people from all over the world!”
“I always imagined working in IT as sitting in front of a computer all day, but I was impressed by how freely these women worked and how much fun they seemed to be having!”
Please take a minute to view pictures of the hard-working school girls and the women warriors of Rakuten!
